The Case of the Quebec Black Metal Scene"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Abstract<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The designation of the black metal sound as \u201clo-fi\u201d by academics is problematic, since it doesn\u2019t reflect the contemporary black metal production. Field- work in the Qu\u00e9bec scene show that the members designate their sound as being \u201cin the middle\u201d \u2013 or mid-fi as I advocate it. In this paper, I first define \u201chi-fi\u201d, \u201clo-fi\u201d, \u201cauthenticity\u201d and \u201cmid-fi\u201d in the context of black metal. Then, I present different black metal sound aesthetic using audio extracts, frequency analysis, spectrogram images and ethnographic data.
